Researching UI

I started researching UI by looking at UI choices by games in the tower defense genre.

Then I started to come up for UI mockups. This first one shows the UI in the world, where a message pops up after the player hovers over the ride. This was inspired by Sanctum 2, a hybrid tower-defense/FPS game.

After some discussions with another student however, I realised that this approach would be difficult to read. He suggested I looked into games like Bloons TD, which had weapon options as a UI element to the side of the screen. I had a look and decided to use it for my next mock up:
