In this blog post, I’ll look into music and sound for my tower defence game, Metal Madness.
Theme music and sounds from other tower defence games
The 2 main tower defence games I looked at when making up the design for this game were Bloons TD 6 and 5. Provided below are the music tracks to 2 of their early game stages. As you can hear, the music can be described as easy going, matching the tropical vibe that the games typically have.
I played through Bloons TD 5 to find out what type of sound effects exist within the game. Besides the theme music played above, the other sounds from the game were SFX from placing down the towers, popping sounds when the balloons (bloons) were destroyed, and when frosty bloons (those previously hit by the Ice Tower) get hit again.
Bloons TD 6 features most of the same types of sound effect usages, in addition to some other sounds. A player can put a single hero monkey, or tower, into the game, who occasionally makes combat barks, usually when they level up or if the player clicks on the tower.
Game sounds
I had a look at a website called Freesound to find examples of sound effects that I could potentially use within my game.

The theme tune was the hardest to find as I couldn’t find anything suitable within Freesound. But, I found one that I felt could work on OpenGameArt.
(It has been compressed to make it fit onto WordPress. You can find the full album here: https://opengameart.org/content/enchanted-tiki-86).
