Character Concepts

Concept Art and References

Gregg Barnes

Since I wanted to focus on the Circus, I decided to look into concept artists that worked with making stage costumes, since these costumes tend to be more dramatic and bolder due to the fact that they are meant to be seen from a distance. Gregg Barnes is a well known, Tony award winning costume designer for popular musicals like Legally Blonde and Kinky Boots. His concepts clearly highlight the character through the costume design as well as the posing, many of the designs have bright, blocky, colours. This aspect specifically inspired the style for my game.

I considered making fairies look less humanoid in my game, but decided against it since I found it easier to characterise a more humanoid character, although I did like these simple designs.

I tried to conclude the heights of each character using HeightComparison, as it is important in establishing the scale of the characters in game and how their silhouette looks, especially for the dragons and fairies since I wanted them to be distinguishable from the humans at a glance. Making their sizes drastically different was the easiest way to achieve this.

Since this game takes place in the human lands, I concluded that most of the characters would still be human, although many of these characters would not be recurring as frequently as the main cast.

Below is all of the first concepts and following sketches of my characters, including the colour scheme that I initially decided on using Paletton.
