The creation of the Sound Effects for Lament has been significantly more complex compared to the creation of the music. The other suprisingly difficult thing with the SFX was actually finding references to use. I either had to have a game sound in mind to focus on, or instead I had to almost just eperiment with things until they sounded ‘right’.
Lots of the things with SFX is that the sounds don’t come from what you’d normally expect. For example, a sound for confusion or alarm is literally imitating an alarm sound normally. But for more obsure emotions that we want to convey, like confusion, there aren’t many references and the references I can use often have other supporting features to convey those emotions.
Easily the hardest one I had was the creation of ‘confusion’. Lot’s of games like ‘Pokemon‘ use the confusion sound they have in pair with some visual effects. In the ‘Black and White’ games, the Pokemon have some small yellow rubber ducks spin around the character to imitate being confused.
Because of this the SFX don’t actually sound of confusion, but instead just support the VFX conveying the emotion. The VFX we have in the game currently is just a ‘?’ popping up. Which isn’t much to work around.
One site that I tried to use to make SFX was sfxr.me. This site creates older more retro style sound effects like what I made below.
This SFX, whilst I felt it worked as an item pick up sound, was not met in the same light by the group so I pivoted into using Beepbox.co to create more similar sounds to the music.
Below are some of the unique SFX that I made for the game using Beepbox.co. In order I made a Suprise, Confused and ‘glittering’ SFX noise. These were by no means the best sounds, however, we felt that they still fit the tone and sounds of the game.
The link here contains all the SFX that I made on Beepbox.co
Along with the SFX that I made, myself and Ayse set off to find some other SFX online we could use for free, where we found the links below that also fit our needs.

Overall the SFX were significantly harder to make for the project compared to the music, I feel. If this is because I have had experience making and playing music before or simply because I found creating unique sounds that fit the game more challenging is hard to choose between.
In terms of my outcomes I am quite happy with the sounds I made but I definatly feel that in the future, if I were to work on SFX or Lament again, I would try to improve my ability to create SFX to a better degree than I have here.
The final thing to mention is that thee are just the sound effects that I contributed to the group. Xane, Ayse and I all found or made seperate SFX to work on the project at different points in time and the end result is a collage of these. All in all, we feel they all fit the general vibe of sound we wanted to go for, mostly following Ayse’s lead and Xane’s homemade temporary sounds that he added in to make sure that they worked in Unity in the first place.
