Week 6

Guest Speaker

On Monday we had guest speaker Louis Torres Tailfer who is a Unity engineer and programmer. He has experience working on several games including a game called Zellige which was a game set in Islamic era Spain which I found particularly interesting as I am fascinated by that era of history and did a lot of research on it in the first semester for my GDD. Louis gave a presentation about programming and made the case that programming was itself a form of art. Unfortunately I attended late so I missed most of his lecture but what I did witness was interesting to me.

After his lecture he came around to our groups to give us feedback on programming apects. The main takeaway was that he told me and my group that making a boss would be difficult and could take about the same length it took to make the rest of the game to make the boss which would make us need to reconsider how we spent our time for the rest of the project’s duration.

Work of the Week

This week I continued on fixing and implementing already existing assets into Unity. I first fixed the box collider issue with the tree of sorrow in the hub so that it matched up the actual tree’s shape. I also implemented all the enemy animations and the all the player hurt animations. Those aspects took longer than expected to do but I was able to accomplish it in the end. I also finally implemented sound to the game, although I just used placeholder audio. The last thing I tried to do was implement some door animations for the dungeons however I was unable to do so. I thought for this aspect to consult E-Jay on it if I was still unable to do so after keeping at it for a while given he has the most comprehensive programming knowledge in our group, for now however I will try to do it myself.

This short video showcases the placeholder audio I added into the game as well as the enemy animations.

Next week is reading week so I may be more focused on business and doing the wordpress website. However I also set myself the task of implementing the death animation for the player and at least attempting to implement the dungeon door animations.

Reflection

Overall I completed a lot this week in terms of implementation and coding, increasing my familiarity with Unity and C#. I am pleased with everything I have accomplished thus far and will be happy to continue working at this pace next week after I’ve given attention to the other module and aspects of this one.
