Story Brainstorm
Potential Premises:
After researching the medieval islamic world, medieval Egypt, and several old occult and magic books, as well as revising the Quran I came up with several ideas for the storyline of the game.
- A treasure hunter/mage in search of an ultimate grimoire that will reveal the secrets of the universe which will grant him unlimited power.
- A mage seeking power to gain as much power as God (similar to the first one but with a further religious emphasis).
- A religious man seeking to destroy all grimoires and the magicians of the land.
- A former mamluk soldier (i.e. slave mercenary) journeys across the deserts stretching from North Africa into Afghanistan (or a fantastical location based on the regions of north Africa, the levant, and the middle east). Looking for purpose, either in religion or in magic.
- A former mamluk who becomes a holy man and finds new purpose in battling the forces of magic in order to rid the land of the “evil” influence of magic.
- A former mamluk who becomes a mage and finds new purpose in battling the “foolish” followers of religion
I found the most compelling one to be the fourth one, as it is not too steeped into either religion nor magic like the fifth and sixth ones. It also has room for more depth in terms of writing and meaning than the three before it which are more simple and potentially more restrictive as a result. In this premise as well, I can see more gameplay options being open to the player, maybe they can try to lean into the religious aspect and become a holy warrior or they can become a mage if they so desire. Or maybe they can walk the line and remain in the middle. I’m unsure how exactly it will play but I do believe this idea has the largest potential for an interesting story.
