Mechanics and Gameplay

Core Mechanics:

Point and Click

  • The most important mechanic of Interactive Fiction or Visual Novels is point and click. This is because it is the central method of advancing gameplay and plot.

Put Together a Jigsaw Puzzle.

  • Like I said in the Overview, this Interactive Fiction game is centred on the narrative, to weaken the puzzle-solving part. So the core mechanic of the game is very simple which is putting the puzzle pieces together under the guidance of the heroine.
  • The reason the Jigsaw Puzzle was chosen as the main mechanism is that it is simple enough to complete the puzzle, only requiring the player to rely on vision to select the pieces that match the hints. So using jigsaw does not increase the difficulty of the game, shifts the focus of the game, but also adds some interactivity to the player so they don’t have to stare at the text all the time and get bored.

Core Game Loop:

  • The player repeats these steps: exploring the map, completing puzzles, getting information (flashbacks), and until they reach the end of the game. Due to the fixed nature of the game loop, the simple mechanics of the game will not provide enough positive feedback to the player, so the information provided to the player needs to be something that makes them think or is interesting. As a result, the images in the flashbacks need to be contrasty enough (depressing or oppressive enough) to provide additional information beyond what is known about the plot.
