Concept Art Drafts

For Angelie’s character, I was on the fence about different directions and designs. On the one hand, I wanted her to be sweet and angelic, born into fame but an unwilling recipient. I also thought of making her a cunning rival who wants to take Genevieve’s place.
For either direction, her designs would both have that sweet-looking element in common – but almost to an uncanny extent. When I first started planning her design, I restricted her colour palette (especially her clothing) to pastels and other soft colours, however, after drawing her in the black Evening Dress by Balenciaga, (top left) I found that it made her stand out more and considered it for the final design.
With help from a classmate, I decided to change her design to make her sweeter, aligning more with what I originally had in mind (see finished design in Art section of GDD). Like Doris Day, who was the archetypal Girl Next Door in contrast to Marilyn Monroe, Angelie is Genevieve’s foil. Almost the complete opposite, Angelie’s shapes are much softer and rounder (curled hair, sweetheart neckline, and heart-shaped hairline) in comparison to Genevieve’s more angular silhouette. Her dress is pastel pink and a little more modest (inspired by the New Look silhouette by Dior), a symbol of traditional femininity and values.
