Anna’s character profile

Inspo & Drafts

Key elements of Ingrid’s character:

  • Player’s sister-in-law
  • Decisive, down-to-business, and stubborn
  • Calm and collected
  • Reserved but will speak her mind without fear of repercussions
  • A master of her craft (a brilliant engineer)
  • Will leave Earth as it only reminds her of what she has lost

Ingrid’s character design was one of the easier ones in making it obvious what her job was in the camp. Since she’s an engineer, she’s always wearing her jumpsuit, so it was just a matter of finding ways to make her uniform more personalised and interesting. When creating her character, I believe I stayed true to the vision of her character and only strayed slightly to make her appearance match the post-apocalyptic setting.

Early iterations of Ingrid’s design

For her colour palette, I decided to stick with synthetic colours listed in the GDD: blue and black, as it displays her desire to leave at the end of the game and how she isn’t bound to Earth. For her tattoos, they were more on the nose as they were tech-inspired rather than traditional/old school tattoos, as I thought this was cleaner. The dark, thick, and angular lines of the tattoos matched her stoic personality a bit more, as well as added an element of masculinity to her appearance.

Ingrid’s uniform is dirtier and more dishevelled than the original vision, which aligns more with the characters’ scarcity and survivalist mindsets, as looking presentable is low on their priority lists. Ingrid’s appearance is a mix of masculinity as she wears a work jumpsuit (typically something worn by men as it is a male dominated field) mixed with natural sex appeal or a “badass” style as she wears pin-up/rockabilly inspired makeup.

I wanted to keep Ingrid’s facial features quite striking as I took a lot of inspiration from the top left image of the original moodboard. What the women all have in common in the original moodboard is strong jawlines, high nose bridges and dark eyebrows so I wanted to recreate this in Ingrid’s design. Moreover, I kept her expression quite stoic/steely as I believed this would make sense with her backstory of her losing her partner, where she has become sort of jaded and weary of the world.
