Key elements of Lily’s character:

  • Player’s daughter
  • Teen
  • Lost in a world that died before her time
  • Strong and rebellious opinions
  • Restless and curious
  • Idealistic and picky
  • Skilled fighter
  • Likes customising her clothes

Lily’s character, in my opinion, was the easiest to design. She is an adolescent and has the most “common” wardrobe out of the other three family members. The original moodboard for her character includes Ellie from The Last Of Us and Kim from Two Weeks to Live. Each image of their costuming shows lots of layers and I took a lot of inspiration from Kim’s outfit as I believe it really embodied what the moodboard was trying to convey.

While researching more references for Lily’s costuming, I came across the character Maisie Lockwood from the Jurassic World franchise. I found that an oversized military style jacket was a common wardrobe choice for these adolescent characters in dystopian settings. Maisie’s jacket was decorated with a few patches and embroidery on the pockets, which I wanted to recreate on Lily as this gave more context to her character. Lily’s stern expression takes after her grandmother, and the embroidery on her pockets implies their close relationship, as this could have been done by Patty or was taught to her.

For her colour palette, I stuck to the organic colours stated in the art design of the GDD (e.g. sand, brown, and dusty colours) as it links to her amazement and curiosity about the original Earth. However, I also included blue and black as they not only signify synthetic fabrics but possibly how Lily’s mindset can change to align with the players at the end of the game.

Early iterations of Lily’s design

Much like the other survivors, her clothing has a lot of pockets and a focus on practicality, but she also personalises her clothing and bag with embroidery, pins, and patches she’s made or found while scavenging. To ensure other aspects such as Lily being a skilled fighter were obvious in her design, I drew a bandage wrapped around her hand.

While creating her character (and likely other characters in the future), I was rather nitpicky about the individual facial features. Despite never having actually watched or read Looking for Alaska, one of the main characters, Alaska Young, was a good reference for Lily’s face. She seemed like a free spirit, opinionated, and a dreamer, which on the surface is Lily’s character.

After stumbling onto the topic of physiognomy (face reading), I wanted their personalities to shine through with just a glance at their faces. Being a stereotypical moody but keen adolescent, I gave her a pout and stern eyebrows. According to face reading, close-set eyebrows mean issues with authority, which Lily displays with her stubbornness towards the player. Also, a fleshy nose tip signifies kindness, quick wit, and fast thinking. (See finished concept art in Character Assets)
