Major Focus: Art
Since it is a dress-up game set in the 1950s, accurate clothing, character design, and set dressing will make the game both engaging and believable. In another post, I mentioned that some elements (silhouettes, makeup, etc.) can be modernised slightly to be more kitsch, but at its core, will be rooted in 1950s iconography and American culture.
Early on, the art will give hints that the game is disguised as a simple dress-up game (more on this in the Art Direction and World Design posts).
Minor Focus: Narrative
The narrative is just as important as the game revolves around Genevieve and her relationship with the other characters. The dialogue and actions should feel authentic and have weight as the player’s decisions during this will shape the outcome of the story.
Genevieve’s aspirations and flaws led to the beginning of the game, so these should be evident throughout the game.
Each character should feel like people you would meet in real life and their decisions should reflect that. There may be antagonists but it shouldn’t be obvious that a character is a villain – they’re human.
