As the name implies, the character artist is primarily in charge of creating and drawing characters for the game. This role’s tasks range from concept sketches to the finalised character which will be shown in the game. It’s important that they pay attention to anatomy, costuming, physical traits, as well as the character’s personality so that when they actualize the character, the interpretation will be accurate to the designer’s vision.
With the context of Franek’s game Those Left Behind (which was my first choice!), I knew I wanted to have the role of a 2D artist as I believe this is one of my strengths. Those Left Behind is a managerial game (without the stress of number crunching) which focuses on ‘creating a story with meaningful choices’. I was drawn to the game by the compelling presentation during the first semester when we were pitching our ideas. Those Left Behind emphasises the importance of your relationships with each family member and how this affects the narrative and whether you will escape, adapt or purge what is left of the Earth.
