Inspiration
The main inspiration for this character was Billy Zane’s roles as Caledon “Cal” Hockley in Titanic and Marty Lakewood in This World, Then the Fireworks (For costuming as it is set in 50s America). I also took inspiration from Lauren Bacall’s (an actress in the 50s) manager – Howard Hawks and Don Arden. Mostly for the wardrobe, early life and careers to flesh out the character. Although it was obvious that Cal Hockley was an antagonist, he was liked by many of the other upper-class characters in Titanic.

His character will be similar in that he only makes connections for convenience and his own gain. He only gives the time of day to those he deems deserving, otherwise he is dismissive and terse. The way he speaks to Genevieve will be deceptively sweet and subtly manipulative, using his status, good looks, and magnetic charm to make not only her, but the rest of the industry bend to his will. He has a strong sense of entitlement, fueled by his privileged upbringing and believes he should be just as commended for her success. His relationship with her is fiery but conditional, dependent on her popularity. Despite this, he still showers her with lavish gifts: exotic furs, diamond watches, and silk dresses.
Many Las Vegas casinos and hotels that featured performers were run by mobs. I thought of possibly making him a mobster as it does make him more of a threat to the MC, however, I was worried that it could risk sounding very fanfic-esque so this idea was scrapped.
