When brainstorming my ideas at the beginning of the project, I was inspired by another horror game disguised as a dress-up game. Originally a short video about a player finding and playing a lost 2006 flash game, the player has to help Lacey pick out an outfit for a date. Throughout the game, she is followed by a stalker who intends to kidnap, dismember, and cannibalise her remains; his first appearance is in the corner, outside her bedroom window. The game has a total of six endings, all arguably negative with one true ending.
Posted on YouTube by ghosttundra in 2022, Lacey’s Wardrobe has the appearance of a cute dress-up game but it is clear that something is off. When the player dresses Lacey up at nighttime, the music sounds off-putting, becoming slightly distorted and sounds reversed. The music usually sets the tone, with the button sounds remaining unchanged. The dress-up segment is interjected with the sound of heavy breathing and incessant knocking before it turns into banging on her door. She receives phone calls from her stalker demanding her to let him in. The game often breaks the fourth wall with glitches in the audio and art. Lacey can break through the coded dialogue by begging for help or trying to convince the player to stop her from getting killed. The background can also distort: showing screen artefacts, corpses of in-game characters or stock photos of real people with their faces blurred.
