When researching 50s menswear, my main focus was on business and formal wear. This was due to my decision that the only major male character would be – for the majority of the game – wearing this style.
It was common for high-earning men in the 50s to keep their business attire sombre, conservative, and mature. During the early 50s, they opted for suits in blue, grey, black and brown coupled with a pair of leather oxford shoes. In favour of comfort, the design of suits and pants became simpler. More mainstream and affordable designs ditched pleats and belt loops as well as blazer shoulder pads to have a more natural silhouette. Towards the end of the decade, lapels were thinner, trousers were no longer cuffed and they became bolder with pattern, design, and texture.
Single-breasted blazers/coats were favoured due to their versatility from formal to casual. They were characterised by having two to three buttons and a peak, shawl, or (commonly) notch lapel.
