Genevieve (The Starlet)

Concept Art Drafts

I knew that I wanted the character designs to be exaggerated in the same way fashion illustrations are – with long exaggerated limbs and thin frames (usually 8-9 heads tall). Genevieve’s poses and body language will be her defining features, displaying her confidence and attitude. I made a croquis (a rough outline sketch of a fashion figure) to demonstrate some of her poses.

These are a collection of early sketches and concept art I made when experimenting with the game’s art style, which I did for each character. I knew how I wanted Genevieve to look but wasn’t sure how to show it through the art style so I did a lot of drafting, using inspiration from artists that I found during my research (ranging from semi-realism to stylised). I liked the pose on the far right drawing but didn’t like the way it looked: the colours, and the proportions looked a little odd and overall it was obvious that it was unfinished. So, I used elements of this drawing I liked to make a new one that I was more happy with (see concept art at the top of the page).

With Genevieve’s design (see finished design in the Art section of the GDD), I wanted it to be almost glaringly obvious that she has a taste for finer things. She likes to show off and stand out from the crowd; evident through her long, form-fitting red dress, diamond jewellery and fur stole. Both her silhouette (angular and comprised of sharp shapes) and colour palette would convey her allure and drive, but also danger and rage.
