Anna’s design and description of Whisper :

Whisperers are one of the enemies Anna sketched out that would appear in all realms and level which is also known as a griefling. The Whisper symbolises fleeting, invasive thoughts that distract and disrupt focus. Its design is agile contrasting with the slow, heavy Wrought.

Anna’s design and description of Whisper :

  • Shape: A small, floating, wisp-like entity with trailing, smoky appendages.
  • Texture: Smooth and glowing, almost like a faintly transparent sphere surrounded by tendrils of mist or smoke.
  • Colour: Pale blues or whites, with a subtle aura or shimmer around it to enhance its ghostly quality. Red eye.
  • Motion: Erratic and fast. When preparing to fire a projectile, it pauses briefly and gathers energy into a small orb of light through is eye.

Using Anna’s currents sketches of the whispers and her Pinterest boards I created a mood board and various different sketches to create combination of different enemy designs whilst keeping the main elements. What caught my eye was the dark colour palette and the floating like wisp shape the whisper has.

Whispers with arms : experimenting different arm shapes

After a while of experimenting with different hand shapes and eye shapes, I came up with 3 more polished sketches, where I kept the colour palettes dark and kept the overall look of a wispy body.

For option 1, I opted to make the hand bend in an unusual way and an eyes appear all around the whisper, as well as a main eye, in order to give the whisper an unsettling appearance.

For option 2, I decided to add a more ‘wet’ look to show the impact of the depression realm on the whisper, as well as a ghostly aura and a more inverted eye to make it appear more ghoulish.

For option 3, I wanted to give it a sharper look, so I made the hands look like claws and the eye form more realistic to create a more eerie appearance.

I wanted to get feedback so I decided to do a survey asking about the visual look of the whisper and what I could improve on. From the responses I will decide on which polish sketch will be used for the game.

I wanted to test how the final design of the whisper looked with different backgrounds to see how it would alter the overall visual appeal of the drawing. I think it works best with darker backgrounds, like as dark blue and dark maroon.
