Protagonist

I decided the put all the information of her design process of the main protagonist and group them up together to get a greater understanding of what she wanted to show and after viewing everything I came up with a Mood board Specifically for the pixelized protagonist.

I was inspired by Anna’s previous mood board for the protagonist and looked at different ratios of pixel characters that could help me create the image of the protagonist.

The feed back I got from this draft from my teamates was that it looks a bit too cute for a rogue-like game. While they did like the colouring I used, they prefered it be a more less cute and instead a protagonist that fit the rogue-like look more. Therefore, I decided to change the design and create more fitting designs.

First prototype of the protagonist

This was my first draft of the protagonist, created in the app ‘RESPRITE’ I included the same colouring palette as the original protagonist and was highly inspired by the main protagonist in Shovel Knight and Baby Groot. This was my first time using/doing pixel art, so I tried a bunch of apps on my iPad, including ‘Pixel Studio’ and ‘Pixsquare’. I discovered that resprite was the best match for me right now.

These were all my second drafts of the protagonist, which I disliked since they were visually unappealing to me. I experimented with different leg, arm, and head shapes. Along with multiple cloak patterns and colours. These drafts were all created in Resprite.

3rd and final design of the protagonist

I chose to make another draft of the protagonist that I liked visually and decided to add or remove some components from my previous designs. I kept the side cloak style and the same colour palette, but added more noticeable treelike aspects like the branches on top of the head, changing the leg shape, and going with a dark to bright gradient across the body.

While I did create another design based on my preferences, I wanted to conduct a survey to see what other people thought of my ideas because I wanted to hear everyone’s thoughts as well.
