Enemy 2 – Grinan


This is one of the many enemy concepts that wasn’t implemented in the game because we didn’t have time to implement it so we cut it out.

Character profile : Grinan

concept: Grinan is an enemy that physically can’t stop smiling representing the forced fake emotions. It’s design is meant to look unsettling, especially with the permanent smile with the smaller crying eyes to show the Grinan true feelings. Taller than the player the Grinan attacks by jumping towards the player trying to slash the player

  • Shape : two-legged claws, full of hair, multiple smaller crying eyes with a massive forced smile and a main eye inside its mouth.
  • texture : Hairy
  • colour : dark blue tones, greys and reds
  • motion : moves quickly and attacks with its mouth

1st iteration

  • This was my first go at pixel art, I used the app Resprite and while I like the overall look, I feel like it doesn’t have the scary look since it’s so small.

Feedback from survey : These are the questions I sent out to get peer feedback with the pixelated design of Grinan.

After receiving feedback, I will make one more iteration using the current palette because I noticed in the feedback that while it is scary, I feel like I can make a better design. My main focus will be focusing remaking the teeth and dripping blood to have a more polish look.


2nd iteration

  • This was second iteration of the Grinan, I found it harder to implement the eye features so I focused on what the major scares factors such as teeth and dripping blood.
