Final updates

On the Monday of our final week, we had a meeting with Sophie to discuss some issues with our project, more details in the post below:

In the final week of the project, I spent time finishing my blog. I checked over every post from semester 2, and made a very long to do list for everything I felt was missing. This was a lot easier than just working through it without direction, and meant I (hopefully) wouldn’t forget anything.

After our meeting on Monday, I also helped Anna design the final versions of the dialogue scripts, as our previous versions needed adapting to the new gameplay format. Here is a clip of Patty’s dialogue scene, with expressions implemented:

After playing the finished build, I did notice a few issues with the game – days lasted too long and resources will continuously increase at a stable rate indefinitely, some taking so long to accumulate that gameplay can begin to feel a bit dull. There are also several features missing, including a tutorial, throwing players in completely blind. There are no sound or special effects, making interactions fall flat. And there is absolutely no fail state, so there is no risk – reward balance at all, and no real meaning to character interactions. However, the game works which is the most important part, and its definitely rewarding to see all of our hard work in the form of a final vertical slice, despite our deviations. I am mostly just happy we were able to finish it before the deadline, as on Monday that seemed unlikely.

Here is my final personal development reflection, where I have a long, uninterrupted ramble about my experience working on Those Left Behind:

Survivor camp final design:

Unfortunately I ran out of time to add extra details to the survivor camp, due to focussing on more important things like my second module and the dialogue backgrounds. If I did have the time, I would have implemented the following changes:

  • More details to be added inside and outside the camp:
    • Sleeping camps
    • Trash, fungus and rocks outside the camp
    • Pollution in the water
    • Launchpad details – wires ect
  • Camp walls to be fortified:
    • Fence made taller and stronger – thicker and supported from behind.
    • More guard posts to be added around the perimeter.
  • Scale down bollards, add more defensive stuff outside the front gate.
  • Water to look less like snow.
  • More emphasis on bright sunlight, especially on the resource camps.

I am still very proud of how the survivor camp turned out, Its probably one of the most interesting environments I have ever designed and I really enjoyed all the research I did for it. I wanted to add a human touch to the camp and I really think I achieved this with all the details I was able to add. Of course, the world would have felt even more immersive with the final details added, but I am still pleased with what I was able to achieve in the time I had.
