Scavenger Camp

Scavenger camp design:

‘The scrap camp would resemble scrap itself, a shack with piles of scrap around the building, and vehicles waiting for expeditions – behind a fence to prevent other survivors from stealing them.’

Process:

I began with this sketch, blocking out the piles of scrap and defining features. I drew a broken part of a military bomber plane as the main structure, and made sure to include a vehicle used in scavenging expeditions.

I blocked in colours, making sure to use reds – the camps assigned colour pallets. I enjoyed adding texture to the piles of scrap, I felt these piles really defined the camp, making it look like a huge scrap heap. I made sure to add plenty of rust tones to the old metal to give it the post apocalyptic treatment.

Finished design:

I finished the design by adding highlights and texture to the floor, worn from people coming and going. I added a campfire in the middle, a place for workers to have a break and stay warm during the cold nights.

I’m really pleased with this design, as the first completed camp it boosted my confidence for the next designs.
