Week 9 – UI/UX Design

Lecture notes

Games have common UI that help the players accomplish goals.

  • UI can be diegetic – integrated in the Gameworld.
  • Or non-diegetic – Menus that pop up on screen.

Game UI focusses on creating visual cues that help the users follow the intended course of action in any given videogame. Those cues can be diegetic, non-diegetic, meta or spacial.

Game naming

Continuing from last week, I used co-pilot to help brainstorm botanical names and common town name endings to create a unique but realistic sounding name for my town. The name of the town will also be the name of the game. Once I had a few solid options, I put together this survey to determine outsiders opinions, so I could get unbiased responses. Here is my survey and its questions:

Lilys of the valley was corrected to Lilies.

I chose each question very carefully as I didn’t want people to solely pick the name they preferred. While I did want to know which name people thought sounded the best, I was more interested in whether they though the name suited the game, and its themes. I also thought it was very important to allow people to explain their decisions, allowing insight into why they chose the answers they did.

Game name results

The most important results for me were:

Which name best fits with the art style:

  • 1st = Evergreen Grove
  • 2nd =Honeysuckle Hollow
  • 3rd = Vale of Verbena

Which name best suits a cosy small-town RPG:

  • Joint 1st = Evergreen Grove and Honeysuckle Hollow
  • 2nd = Lilies of the Valley

Which game best suits a town with a strong community:

  • 1st = Evergreen Grove
  • Joint second = Hollyhock Heights and Honeysuckle Hollow

Most people chose Honeysuckle hollow because it sounded sweet or cute, which is a fair enough reason, but I personally wanted the name to feel like it resembled the town and games theme as well as sounding aesthetic. The most important questions confirmed to me that the best name would be Evergreen Grove, I also wrote my reasoning for this being my preferred name in the survey:

Florist questionnaire results

These answers really helped me gain a better understanding of everything I was still unsure about, I now feel confident that I know enough about floristry to design a game about it.
