In our third and fourth week our guest lectures were by Jake Detonator, an independent illustrator/graphic designer and teacher of illustration.
This was an extremely good insight into the building blocks of a unqiue character. For example, we looked at the designs in The Incredibles to see how shape language informs the viewer’s impression of a character, and how visual references to these archetypes can make a character feel unique but not totally alienating to a viewer.
Jake’s ethos when it came to making stories was creating something relatable for the viewer, and as such he encouraged us to take inspiration from our surroundings and any “coincidences” between the real-world and our story.
After the first session where we were encouraged to create at least one drawing of a potential character for my game, I created this character, essentially a god-type character that controls the laws of physics.

Jake was a big fan of this design, and while bouncing ideas off each other he came up with the idea of having multiple gods that could control physics, in a way similar to Hades, as I mentioned wanting to be able to control different physical parameters of the world. I thought this was a great idea and I immediately started thinking of ones for different physical forces.
