To start my research into creating a game design document, I decided to use the provided resources at https://gamedocs.org/documents/ to look at some old GDDs for pointers. Unfortunately, most of these links are now dead at this point, but I did find some that I found to be very good examples. For example, the document for the now unfortunately cancelled shooter Dirty Bomb is still freely accessible, and is an easy to read GDD that contains all the elements I need to incorporate in my own document.
For example, the opening page starts with a short statement giving the overview of the game, and then goes straight into describing the game pillars: essentially a handful of overarching design philosophies that will guide development of all game features.

Its first pillar focuses on the characters as a large selling point at the time was a wide range of selectable mercenaries to play as. The sub categories of the pillar are very short, only consisting of a couple sentences, and this is something I need to keep in mind when writing my own GDD overview
