Week 2: Greybox + Movement

The first official week of production we started building out the basic level. We didn’t want anything too expansive, so the vertical slice would consist of two rooms on the ground floor of the house: living room and kitchen.

For the player we substituted a cube in place of a rat, and added movement code consisting of walking and jumping, as well as camera rotation. Then we began to test the movement feel and how it aligned with the greybox. The design definitely needed improvement, and the camera rotation needed refinement as it kept clipping through objects.

There was also a brief attempt to add climbing to the movement, using the player’s friction against the wall. However it was difficult to control and unrealistic, so the idea was ultimately scrapped.

Parker:

Hugo:

– Created the greybox
– Created a lowpoly rat model

Indiana:

– Designed level layout
– Began 3D modelling set pieces

Chen:

– Wrote up 5 different objectives for the rat to fulfil
