Audio

When all UI issues were majorly solved, I began researching different background sounds for Violet’s bedroom scene. I wanted the sound to be light and calming, one that would be associated with the beginning of a sunny day. I browsed through Freesound to find the audio I needed and chose 9 I liked most (shown below). I consulted these picks with Jessie and after she narrowed the sounds down to her favourite ones, I chose Happy Chill Loop by Serge Quadrado (number 6 below) as the final background sound for Violet’s bedroom.

The short horror fragment also required a separate sound for better immersion. It was supposed to be scary so I decided it might be a good idea to add a sudden loud noise to slightly jumpscare the players. The horror cafeteria was made in a glitchy art style and I found a buzzing noise to be very fitting for it. Therefore, that is what I researched. Ultimately, I chose the sound number 1 as it was clearer and louder.

Aside from the buzzing noise, I also tried to find a scary background music, just to see if they would mix well together. The buzzing sounded good on its own but Jessie and I thought that the music was fitting and helped with the immersion so she coded it into the game.

Another scene which required sound was the front of the café. I immediately thought of adding a bustling city sound so that’s the sound I searched for. The first one I found which I thought would suit the scene was sound number 1 below, however, after feedback from the team, I searched for the sound more as the one I initially found was not ideal for that environment. Eventually, I chose the audio number 2 – it was calmer, more serene and fitting for the game.

The next aspect I had to consider was what sound effect to use for when the player clicks on the map icon. It was brought up by Jessie and I thought a “pop” sound would work for this. In the end however, we had to cut the map icon asset so the sound was not used.
