Major and Minor Focus Page Plan
Introduction:
- Whilst developing and reviewing Doctor Water in my 1 on 1 meeting I’ve identified mechanics and gameplay as the major focuses on the game due to these components being the most influential in engaging players and portraying the games theme and essential experience. Art, although not as important as the other two, is still a minor focus as it is still essential for immersing the player in the world and enhancing the theme of water scarcity and resourcefulness.
Major Focus: Mechanics and Gameplay
- Mechanics and Gameplay
- When brainstorming game ideas one of the founding ideas behind Doctor Water was the unique game mechanic. By tying water scarcity into the core mechanics it creates an opportunity for the player to engage with the environment in a meaningful way. By limiting water as a resource it forces the player to think strategically to solve the different environmental puzzles which reinforces the message of raising awareness for water scarcity. Gameplay complements this through balancing the challenges and exploration through the platforming exploration and problem solving.
Minor Focus: Art
- As I’ve mentioned, although not a main focus, art still plays a crucial role in supporting my main focus through immersing the player in Doctor Water. This has been achieved through the visuals representing both the regions and the cause for water scarcity in that area. In addition, through experimenting with numerous art styles I’ve balanced being a serious game and being a fun game through utilising an art style called hand-drawn, commonly used in many platform games. Although art style helps to improve player experience it predominantly focuses on showcasing the unique mechanics and gameplay.
