After my 1 on 1 meeting it was decided that art would become my minor focus, as such I need to increase the amount of art research and experimentation I was doing. My main reason for not having done this before was because I had never done digital art before and I couldn’t figure out the software and I wasn’t able draw to the same standard as I can on paper, however, I was told that I was allowed to hand in a physical sketchbook as such I started to sketching more regularly and constantly experimenting with different art-styles.

Within my sketchbook it showcases my initial sketches, iterative designs, experiments with different art styles, characters, concepts, and environmental art. This includes some of my early drafts of character design, weapons designs, water style designs, colour palette testing and even some visual research based on countries that inspired the region’s aesthetic.

The sketchbook is crucial in understanding how I developed Doctor Water. It shows not only progression but reflection of feedback on earlier designs and weapon ideas. As such I feel this sketchbook is more than just drawings in sketchbook and is actually the visual journey of Doctor Water, it shows the connection between gameplay, levels, art, mechanics which is something I wasn’t able to do in my prototypes.

Before anyone goes through the GDD I urge you to flick through the sketchbook. It will give you a better understanding of Doctor Water than any text, image can explain.
