Narrative Reflection

Crafting the narrative for ‘Lament’ proved more intricate and time-consuming than I initially anticipated. While I had a clear vision of the game’s darker and more depressive themes, translating these emotions into a cohesive and engaging story presented unforeseen challenges. Balancing the game’s tone, ensuring that character motivations felt authentic, and weaving the narrative seamlessly into the gameplay required multiple revisions and a deeper understanding of storytelling techniques.

One of the primary hurdles was aligning the narrative’s pacing with the player’s experience. Unlike linear storytelling mediums, video games demand a dynamic approach where the story adapts to player choices and actions. This non-linear nature necessitated a flexible narrative structure, ensuring that the emotional weight of ‘Lament’ remained impactful regardless of the player’s path. Drawing inspiration from titles like ‘Gone Home’, which masterfully employs environmental storytelling to convey deep emotional narratives, I aimed to embed story elements within the game’s world, allowing players to uncover the tale organically.

Despite these complexities, the final narrative resonates with the intended themes, offering players a poignant journey through ‘Lament’s sombre world. However, I recognise that there is still ample room for growth. As I continue to hone my narrative design skills, I aspire to craft stories that align seamlessly with gameplay and leave a lasting emotional impact on players.
