What is an “Essential Experience”?
In the context of a game design document (GDD), the term “essential experience” refers to the core emotional or experiential takeaway that you want players to have while playing the game. It represents the defining element of how the game should feel from the player’s perspective, regardless of specific mechanics, graphics, or narrative. This concept helps maintain a focus on delivering a cohesive and impactful experience, serving as a guiding principle for design choices throughout development.
I want my players to have a sense of purpose, fulfilment, and connection with nature as they observe their efforts to find a new home for their collective. I want the players to strive to improve the gameworld for themselves and take this experience into the real world.
