Story Boarding + Gameplay Loops

During week 5 & 6 we got introduced to storyboarding and gameplay loops. And during week 5 it was mentioned that narrative doesn’t have to be necessarily spoken or written it can be told through images, which is exactly what I did.

Storyboarding Process

So when creating my storyboard I wanted it to be firstly able to visualise what events actually took place within my game and what I realised was when creating my user journey for my essential experience I accidently ended up writing down the key events that took place, so this ended up being a beautiful mistake as I was able to number up my now scenes and start the actual storyboarding process.

Here is my first initial storyboard and even though this was a very quick sketch it was insightful and helped quite a lot when then coming up with my first draft of my gameplay loop. I was also able to have a conversation with Vanissa as to begin I was really struggling with what my loop could be about as for the majority my game is heavily narrative based. But she pointed out that there seemed to be a trigger which would then get resolved which I was then able to see a pattern within my storyboard.

Gameplay Loop

This was my first try at a gameplay loop, after my conversation with Vanissa I decided to do a rough sketch of what it could look like as we talked about how there was always a trigger but then there was always a resolution to follow along. And for the majority of my game it follows the same loop apart from when the player gets towards the main trigger even something slightly different happens as there is 3 triggers in a row before having the panic attack but afterwards it slots back into following the same loop all over again.

[Title TBD] is a point and click style game with elements of exploration set in a cosy town. Players will embody the role of a young girl who deals with autism and experience the challenges she faces on a daily occurrence, players will follow Emily’s story through occasionally clicking on different interactable objects. Within my game I want players to feel a sense of empathy and understanding towards Emily and women in general who deal with autism.

UPDATE

After my week 6 guest speaker lecture I have decided to come back and revisit my game loops which can be seen below. After some feedback from Vanissa and Venezia I decided to look at the verbs within the previous game loop and concise them down.
