I was so excited when I got given the role of Environmental Artist, and so to help me get a good understanding of what that entailed for me I decided to do some research into my role.

Research
When researching here were some of my key takeaways for my role:
Environment Design & Conceptualisation
- Collaborating with game designers, art directors, and other team members to understand the vision for the game’s environment.
- Create concept art and rough drafts of environmental ideas, such as landscapes, architecture, terrain, and level layouts.
Lighting & Mood Setting
- Set up and fine-tune lighting within the environment to create the right atmosphere and enhance the game’s visual style.
Environment Optimisation
- Ensure that environments are optimised for performance on various hardware platforms, making sure that assets run efficiently in the game
Collaboration
- Work closely with other departments, such as level designers, character artists, and programmers, to ensure that the environment fits seamlessly within the gameplay and narrative.
Feedback & Iteration
- Review and revise environmental designs based on feedback from the game director, art leads, and playtesting teams.
- Make iterative changes to improve the look and feel of environments as the game progresses through its development stages.
