I created the Oh, Rats! titlescreen after realising that our resident concept artist was probably not going to be the most forthcoming on work. I had an idea in my head of making the front menu inside a little rat tunnel, initially cluing the player in to what they’ll find in the game.
Originally, the entrance to the hole was going to be a lot more sophisticated. I had reference images of arched doorways and little rat architecture, because in the game you can upgrade your little living space in the tunnels to make a home for yourself.

I tried to make it look a bit cartoony, to fit Esi’s style, but to be honest lineart isn’t my strong suit; I prefer digital painting. I went off the idea after its poor execution, and began looking for new inspiration. That’s when I found the below images.

I much preferred the rough, scratched-out look to the properly built ones. This time I also stuck to my own style of digital painting. I rendered in wallpaper, and added Esi’s logo to the top, and thankfully all of it seemed to go together cohesively!

Lastly, I implemented this into Unity!
