Week 13!!!!!!
With the G.D.D. project this semester coming to a close, I want to reflect back on what I’ve been able to accomplish. My work had a lot of ups and downs.
On the one hand, I did accomplish everything I set out to do, which is quite rare – normally my ambitions are hardly ever realised. But I was able to make a full G.D.D. with a functional website, improved my 3D modelling skills with several asset creations, composited and textured an entire scene, and even managed to make a short animation of flickering TV’s. My grasp of compelling mechanics in games has improved, and I can say at least on a functional level, that all the individual pieces in PARANOIA would work.
But frustratingly, it feels like while on an individual level everything works, when certain elements are put together it doesn’t feel quite right – like the wrong puzzle pieces in a jigsaw. For example, I liked my 3D assets seperately, but it was difficult to put together in a scene, and add to that the trouble I had getting lighting and cameras to work, the overall effect wasn’t as good as I wanted. That and the majority of it was done on my tiny laptop, so each render took ten minutes to load – in the end I just lost patience. And without being able to make a prototype – my supreme deficiancy in coding led to any attempts being given up on – it was hard to balance the game mechanics.
While I don’t know if my game will be voted, I did have fun making the design document. I can’t wait to find out who I’ll be working with and what I’ll be working on next!
