Space Station

Ideas and Goals

The space station was the most important part of my game since It would essentially the biggest part of my game world. I was inspired by the movie ‘The Martian’ what left an impression on me was the ring and how gravity held you down differently along the ship.

I was lucky enough to find a very similar design to my station design in a tutorial and used it to help me make it. Youtube video, ‘Orbital Station with a blender…’ by CBaileyFilm:

Modelling the Station

I used a series of path curves to create the main compartment of the station and solidified it to make a big cylinder, for the orbital ring I used a circle and did the same as the curve. After I had the main meshes for my station I began adding detail by decimating the geometry and extruding the faces to make some panelling texture along the mesh. After some more minor details like windows and a bunch of solar panels which is improvised, since its not in my concept drawing, I finished up with some wireframe meshes to add some volume to the main cylinder frame of the ship.

Texture

Very little textures in this model since most of the station is metal, however the metal texture I followed on the tutorial was very creative and managed to add a lot of cool detail to the station. The other two textures were a rubber for the connectors to each compartment in the orbital part of my station and the tinted glass at the front. I wasn’t too happy about the rubber since it looked so plain but I stuck with it since it didn’t make too much of a difference.

Thoughts?

I was happy with the final render since it came out looking very similar to what I had envisioned and also learnt various ways to make the metal texture which was used for this model.
