‘Outer Wilds’ Review

Outer Wilds

Outer Wilds is a game about an astronaut exploring a cartoonish little solar system, unraveling the mysteries of an ancient alien race called the Nomai. As you play the game you realise you’re stuck in a 22-minute time loop, resetting every time the sun explodes. It’s simple on the surface, but the deeper you go, the more mind-blowing it becomes.

I found this game after I finalised my game concept and was surprised with how similar it sounded compared to my concept. It seems to be a sc-fi adventure game set in space with meaningful narrative, I play tested this and it gave me various ideas on the mechanics and items for my game gdd.

Outer wilds come out with the message of ‘ we are all going to die there is nothing you can do so enjoy the little time you have’. I like the message that is shown through fun gameplay. I will be doing a similar thing for my game but with a different less bright message. My games theme is existentialism and nihilism, these themes come through the constant and unescapable deaths that Solace must face for ever. I came up with my core gameplay mostly after experiencing Outer Wilds, it was an enjoyable game to play and it gave me various idea.
