Initial art of the protagonist.

A style I wanted to experiment with for my character design was the art direction the creators of Dead Ahead: Zombie Warfare which the games are able to capture what I want in my game, the lifeless expression of my protagonist and the dark unforgiving world he is in.

The exaggerated shadow below his hair convey my characters feeling of loss and hopelessness which I decided to continue this theme throughout the to align with my game’s narrative. However, also to expand of my narrative’s fictional plot could convey the lifeless killer my protagonist becomes.

Personally wanting to make my game in a pixel style was an obvious choice, and having the colour pallet influenced from both ‘Gris’ and Paul Gustav’s ‘The Last Train’ added a both colourful and moody feel to my game which I wanted to achieve. I wanted to add a bit of neo colours to my character to give that retro feel which my universe would have that’s what led me to the protagonist’s character design.

Class activity idea of a protagonist through cutting simple shapes:

Protagonist traits:

  • A brown and orange sweater
  • Eye bangs from the lack of sleep
  • Fit and sportive build (from the protagonist’s job which requires strength and cardio)
  • Slightly underweight and ill looking
  • Grey / green skin from intoxication

Initially the name I picked for my protagonist was Joe Black based from the movie ‘Meet Joe Black’ which follows The Grim Reaper in a human form tasked to take the life of a media influencer. I originally wanted to follow a similar premise, where the protagonist takes the life of those who took the life of countless of innocents and who is revealed to be the god of death themselves, however I decided to place that mystery around the Activiation Orb in ‘Lazy’ the vacuum, and plays a crucial role as a weapon and a growing entity who shares a carnivorous diet to Audrey II from ‘Little Shop Of Horrors’ survives on blood, flesh and human or animal meat, while allowing my protagonist to remain anonymous.

Vacuum Cleaner concepts

As previously mentioned the idea of a developing vacuum cleaner is an interesting concept having it change depending on the player’s choice of upgrades here are some sketches I made:
