These are the two poster concepts for my game. I wanted to make a poster for the games’ promotional material, so I sketched these two concepts in Paint Tool SAI2.
The first concept is Eta on top of the world, inspired by LittleBigPlanet’s and Katamari Damacy’s official art. I wanted to go for a concept that was 2000s-inspired and incorporates some of the design philosophies that I’ve previously talked about. I’ve personally talked to Parker, and they stated that cut-outs and a collage feel to the art/promotional material is part of the game’s aesthetic.
The second design features the Lord of Gravity and the protagonist, Eta, more inspired by Katamari. I like how quirky this concept is.
The Process
I made the poses for Eta for the poster in Blender by drawing the new facial expressions and changing the armature to move the hands into different poses. I was inspired by Animal Crossing expressions for the different Eta models. I asked my friend what they thought of this concept, and they liked the idea.
“I like the left side because it feels so bubbly and cute. I also get a feeling that the little avatar seems like an outer space mini astronaut. Overall, I like the composition and like the adorable poster sketch.
The right side gives a sense of a parental figure and a child; I like the unique characteristics of each character in the poster and the. composition makes me want to learn more about them / play the game itself.“
- Added the logo and drew a comet
- Started adding background objects and gradients
- Started adding the “sticker effect” to the different etas
- Added Kinetic Panic gradient
- Added more sticker effects
- Refined the title and added more sparkles
The Final Poster
I find the final poster really cool, and Parker approved of it. I love the space aspect as well as the sticker designs of the character. I decided to go for a “space” theme as the levels would be similar to Katamari Damacy, where they take place in different areas of the world, or in this case, different places in this world taken over by the evil Corporations.
