As the 13th week comes to a close, I feel the need to reflect on my journey so far with Oh, Rats! There’s been a lot of fighting with programs (Blender, Photoshop, Illustrator), and decisions to give up on including certain features due to time or skill level (Trailer, Prototype) but there have also been some successes including making my 3D models, making music, my research for my game and its mechanics. I feel like I’ve really fleshed out this idea, and it’s almost completely different to how I imagined it a year and a half ago as a rough idea. Progress isn’t linear but drawing closer to a deadline is when you can finally see how much effort you’ve put in. This blog means a lot to me.
I’m excited to see the future of this game and where it will go. If my game gets voted to be made into a game, it will be cool to see how others interpret the foundation I’ve laid out for them. If it doesn’t get chosen, that’s okay too. In the future, I would like to make this into a fleshed-out game. The idea is solid and a few people have been interested in the idea too. There’s so much more fun content I had for this game that I couldn’t (reasonably) fit into this blog with the time I had but game design has taught me to recognise your limits.
Comparing my week 1 self to my week 13 self, I’ve definitely grown as an artist, and achieved what I wanted to do in my About section. I doubted whether I’d get it done, but I did! One thing I’ve learned about being a game designer is to set weekly deadlines and push yourself even if you don’t want to do it at that moment. Give yourself some rest too, but when it feels like procrastination, it’s time to start up again.
Also, if you’ve read my weekly updates, I implore you to look at the rest of my blog and discover the details I’ve put into the game idea.
Thank you for being on this little journey with me!
