One-Page GDD

Posted on January 12, 2025

As a Rat, life is tough. You are constantly under threat from cats, foxes and birds. One day, you decide you’ve had enough. You’re going to try to invade a human house. You’ve heard legends of rats finding warmth and comfort in human homes and you have nothing to lose. Setting off from your burrow, you venture into the human world.

Core Game Pillars

Core Game Loop

Design Principles

Visual

  • Realism (To what degree?): The rat character should act as such, and the humans should have a range of personalities too. Cartoonish elements are absolutely encouraged but have a 1-1 ratio of each.
  • Adjectives (What first comes to mind when looking at the game?): Vibrant, Punchy, Expressive. Take note of Keven and Priichu’s art styles.
  • Theme (What is the player’s experience?): Playful and pixelated. A grey concrete jungle mixing in with the neon saturation of nature. Go wild with it.

Concept Art Examples

Audio

  • Chiptune and Percussion elements, taking notes from genres like Bitpop, Electropop, Jazz, UK Bassline and Kawaii Future Bass.
  • Day and Night soundtracks to set the mood.
  • Common nature sounds: wind whistling, trees shaking, rat and animal sounds.
  • Common man-made sounds: Cars, Humans chattering/vocalising, shoes clacking on the pavement.
  • Ambience when music is not playing.
