Sound & Music Bible

Posted on December 1, 2024

I experimented with Beepbox, a platform I’ve been using for 5 years on and off to make sounds and music excerpts that could fit into the game.

I test song ideas with this program and even make full songs using various synthetic instruments and presets available. My favourites are the Harp and Chip/Square Wave. While I don’t have the current skillset to make the ideal songs in my head, the genres below are what type of music I’d like my game to have if I ever made a full version.

Main Genre inspirations: Bitpop, Electropop, Jazz, UK Bassline and Kawaii Future Bass.
Other Genre Inspirations: UK House, UK Garage, Jungle, Grime,
Instruments: Chiptune / Percussion

(Due to the MB limit, most audios are compressed. There will be links to HQ versions.)

Day & Night Cycle Themes

Morning Theme 1 (HQ ver)

This theme is a cheery 16-bit song which represents morning time. I wanted the theme to represent what it feels to wake up and have the curiosity to explore. It starts off relaxing at the beginning but picks up a little to be more joyful/outgoing.

Afternoon Theme 1 (HQ ver)

This theme is an upbeat 16-bit song that would be an Afternoon theme. It represents adventure and the time of day when your character is more likely to explore. The music starts a bit “lazy” but sets the tone as it picks up around 0:38 with the uplifting chord progression. This theme feels rather friendly and welcoming. As they explore the area, the Rat player character will feel inspired by the boundless opportunities compared to life back in the burrow. I want this theme to represent that feeling.

Evening Theme 1 (HQ ver)

This theme is a 16-bit song that I imagine is one of the night themes. The theme loops nicely, and I think it could help set the pace for nighttime when the player is exploring outside in the neighbourhood. It sounds a little sentimental, and I imagine that the Rat player character may feel bittersweet or nostalgic towards their old home as they look for a new one. Nighttime is often a time for contemplation, and this theme represents that feeling.
