Week Two – World Building

Posted on
  • What is a world?

A place. A world can be almost anything. Typically a place where people live with certain environmental and cultural theme factoring into it.

  • What is a Gameworld?

A world that is showcased within a game. It can be completely fictional to something based more in reality but typically a fictional world.

What are important factors to think about?

When creating a Gameworld there are many things to consider. Fictional or based in reality you need to establish a believable, consistent environment and theme. Doing this not only helps to create an added layer of immersion for your Gameworld but also can help assist the narrative and goal if done correctly. It is an essential thing to consider when creating your game and GDD, because a good game without a believable and consistent Gameworld can fall flat and be uncanny for the player.

Tasks And Prep

Reading:

#84: The Lens of the World (page 369) – chapter 19

  • How is my world better than the real world?
  • Can there be multiple gateways to my world? How do they differ? How do they support each other?
  • Is my world centred on a single story, or could many stories happen here?

These are all important categories and something i will be looking back on to consider in the future. Doing this will help the task of creating a more believable and three dimensional game world slightly easier.

  • Life Is strange

Life is strange is a story based game with a vast level of world building. It’s world is based on reality with implementations of supernatural themes. What makes this work and feel so immersive during the game? The relations with other characters help build this believable environment, having in game interactions with other characters and also simply the ability to interact with objects in your surroundings greatly impacts the feel of the game and gives it a more three dimensional environment.
