What is concept art?
Concept art is a big component to almost any GDD, it is the first visual refence for your game environment and characters. Concept art is a way of visualising a game and exploring the overall visuals before committing to that look, it is a way to develop and explore. Concept art can also be more refined later into a project, a way to display environments, characters and your Gameworld as refence to 3D artists.
Guest speaker:
We had a guest speaker this week, JAKeDetonator. He shared many introspective and key points towards character design. How you can make characters feel more alive and believable though small simple techniques. Even within high fantasy game worlds refencing from real life can really help to develop a character, from personality to looks and even culture. How sometimes overexplaining a character can cause it to feel unnatural, let players fill in the blanks themselves. Similarly themed to this idea of not being overcomplicated, start with simple shapes in your design. Creating a clear and clean silhouette can help your character to be more recognisable and less visually confusing.
Player experiences:
- I would like the player to feel
I would like my game to convey feelings to the player. Educing emotional reactions can help make a game standout, it is something that will stay with the player and hopefully be more memorable. I have explored and considered many different emotional themes for my game, but there is one that i think stands out to me, nostalgia. How can i create a nostalgic environment within a new game?
- Nostalgia
Including key shared and iconic visuals from my generations childhood is one way of creating this nostalgic environment. Since i want my players to feel this sense of nostalgia whilst playing it has to feel like a memory, how can i do that?
