Week Eight – Audio

Posted on
  • Why is audio design important?

Similar to the visuals of a game audio actually has a lot to o with world building and inducing a certain environment or emotion. Audio alone can change the entire tone of a game, if not planned properly it can throw off the whole entire environment. The goal of sound design is to make an immersive and consistent environment for the player. So what do i have to consider and think about when it comes to sound design?

When it comes to sound design you cant just consider the games background music, but rather every aspect of the game. Having each object the player interacts with or button in the UI make noise can really help the ambience and immersion of a game. So what should you consider in sound design?

Ambience: how sound can help aid the ambience of your Gameworld

  • background music
  • follows the theme of the game
  • new music for different areas
  • changes with the tone
  • can create suspense or give the illusion of a calm environment
  • should create the overall ‘vibe’

Sound Design: how sound can create immersion

  • includes the UI
  • footsteps
  • environmental interactions noise
  • character voice lines

continuing from UI, the user interface should be more then just random bleeps. It has to blend into the Gameworld yet notify the player and stand out, although this is a contradictory concept when done correctly it fits perfectly into your games soundscape but still retains to its purpose.
