Character Overview:
Anger is one of the four Griefs the player must confront. The embodiment of intense, raw emotion that surges uncontrollably. Anger is driven by the primal instinct to fight, confront, and protect its sense of fairness or honour. It is impulsive and fiery, with little regard for the fallout.
What is Anger?
Anger is the second emotional response that individuals may experience after the initial shock or disbelief. This stage involves feelings of frustration, resentment, or rage, and it typically arises when the person is struggling to come to terms with the reality of their loss or change. Grieving individuals may struggle with the feeling that their loss is unfair or unjust, especially if it seems random or happens too soon.
Design Process
My initial thoughts only considered the fact I wanted this character design to feature fire and a lot of it, I wanted to create a warrior of rage. raw, volatile, and explosive. My first design focused on depicting intensity through jagged, dynamic shapes that convey a sense of tension, using harsh, sharp lines. The figure’s legs are partially obscured by a burst of flames and its hands are holding flames representing power and threat. The stance is confident, I had the idea of having the figure look like they are floating. The face obscured with a mask, limiting facial expression and any further characterisation. While sketching the main feature I was drawn to was the hair, a literal fiery mane.

After looking at the designs again I wasn’t fond of it anymore and decided to restart. The design felt flat, boring and too “human”, which wasn’t what I was really going for. My biggest problem was the face being covered, anger to should be clearly represented, for example clenched teeth or glaring eyes, adding to the overwhelming sense of aggression and frustration. I took a different approach this time round and made mindmaps and moodboards.

The idea of unkept and uncontrollable anger made me lean towards animalistic representations of anger, I was drawn to the lion and hornet the most but began to reconsider when I thought about comparing predators and prey, this lead me to think about more abnormal representations such as the ram which is also the symbol of the Aries fire sign part of the zodiac. Fire elementals were in consideration since the idea of a warrior was still in the forefront of my mind. One thing I did really like about my first design was the feminine representation of the character, rage is typically associated with masculininty and therefore depicted that way, allowing anger to take the attributes of a woman is new and fairly unique – it would be nice if I can still incorporate that in some way.

Concept Sketches

Final Concept

I’m much happier with this concept, the character design is more complex and deliberate. The final design of my embodies the fiery strength and untamed resilience I envisioned. The armor, forged in rock and ash, emphasises its dual nature as both a fierce warrior and a creature of the wild. Overall, I’m proud of how the design harmonises ferocity and mysticism.
