Accessibility

Accesibility in games is important because everyone should have a chance to play games regardless of mobility or knowledge, you also don’t want to limit your player demographic. Disabled people play games for a wide variety of reasons, they are more than entertainment and are a tool to help them find independence, or give them a sense of control over their situation. Being able to consider disabled people’s needs and desires makes a person a good games designer.

The Accessibility Guidelines outline considerations or design decisions for the following list that apply to most game mechanics to allow for a higher degree of accessibility.

  • motor
  • speech
  • hearing
  • cognitive
  • vision

The SpecialEffect DevKit offers developers various resources to improve the motor accessibility of their games.

In the second meeting of week 4 we discussed considerations and changes for our game to become more accessible. Luckily, the games concept is quite simple and so accessible changes can be implemented with ease.
